Thailand to Launch 2 New Lotteries

In a fresh effort to eliminate illegal lotteries and overpriced tickets, two brand new government-run lotteries will be launched this year in Thailand, Charnkrit Dejvitak, an assistant to the PM’s office, announced on Tuesday.

He said the first would be a revamped reworking of the existing six-digit lottery, while the second will consist of two-digit and three-digit lotteries, similar to the unsanctioned lotteries with the same number of digits.

In his capacity as chairman of a subcommittee, he spoke of ways to deal with the problem of lottery tickets being sold over the price set by the government.

A contract is being sought with Khon Kaen University to organize public hearings on the proposed lottery products. Before the plan can be forwarded to the cabinet for consideration, this process must be completed.

According to Charnkrit, new lotteries would conform to existing laws and access to young people would be tightly controlled.

He added that ticket sales will also be prohibited on school grounds.

A similar project was launched by the former Thaksin Shinawatra administration but was later terminated due to law violations.

The revenue it generated was supposed to be distributed to the government, lottery winners, and the Government Lottery Office (GPO), but it was illegally distributed.

Mr. Charnkrit said that the number of tickets sold through the government’s Paotang e-wallet mobile application won’t be increased at least for the next two draws, which will be held on June 16 and July 1.

In the first four days following their launch last Thursday, around 5 million e-tickets were sold.

M. Charnkrit said more assessment is needed before the lottery quota for the mobile app can be increased. He added that the initial excitement about the digital lottery could prove to be a passing fad.

The digital tickets haven’t increased Suchinda Sunon’s income in Khon Kaen’s Muang district, as most of her customers are elderly people not familiar with smartphones or making online purchases.
