(CTN NEWS) – SEOUL – Because of the severe winter weather, about 500 flights to and from the South Korean tourist island of Jeju have been canceled, according to the authorities on Tuesday.
This has disrupted travelers on the final day of the Lunar New Year holiday.
According to Reuters, a spokeswoman for Jeju Foreign Airport stated that all 466 domestic flights and 10 international aircraft that were planned to fly to and from the airport had been canceled.
The airline company Korean Air Lines has stated that it has canceled 88 of its daily flights to and from the island.
On Tuesday, the temperature dropped to some of the season’s lowest readings, and it was forecast that southern portions of the country, including Jeju, would be struck with heavy snowfall and high winds.
The morning low temperature in Seoul dropped to minus 16.4 degrees Celsius (2.5 degrees Fahrenheit), and the morning low temperature in the northern county of Cheorwon dropped to minus 25.5 degrees Celsius, according to Yonhap news agency.
The weather court granted cold wave notifications for the majority of the country.
According to another report from Yonhap, hundreds of ferry trips around the country have also been cancelled.
The Lunar New Year holiday, considered one of the two most important holidays in South Korea, came to an end on Tuesday.
