Songkran Festival Thailand 2024

The government says that Songkran Festival celebrations will go ahead next month following a two-year hiatus caused by Covid, adding that safety procedures will still be adhered to.

On Tuesday, Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had promised that all activities and interprovincial travel would be allowed during the Songkran festival from April 13-15.

However, during celebrations, the public must strictly adhere to strict measures, including vaccinations, universal disease screening, and testing for anti-toxin antibodies, Mr. Thanakorn said.

On March 18, the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) will meet to discuss public health safety measures for the Songkran Festival holiday.

The Prime Minister has recommended that all participants of the water-throwing festival receive a third dose of the vaccine and have an ATK test done both before and after their trip.

Covid-19 Risks During Songkran 2022

According to Thanakorn, the Prime Minister has also urged vulnerable groups — such as the elderly, people with underlying illnesses, and pregnant women — to be fully vaccinated before joining Songkran festival activities.

According to the spokesman, the Premier is concerned certain events may increase the risk of Covid-19 transmission, including family gatherings, water throwing, live entertainment venues and excessive drinking.

Mr. Thanakorn said people should remain vigilant and practice preventive measures, such as social distancing, wearing face masks, and regularly washing their hands.

According to Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, the infection rates detected by RT-PCR and ATK tests have declined in the last 2-3 days, which suggests the peak of Covid-19 infections may have been reached.

As of now, many countries, including Thailand, have not reached an infection rate of 60-70% of their population, according to Dr. Opas.
