It has been reported that Russian forces have bombed a maternity and children’s hospital in southern Ukraine, an attack that has been dubbed an “atrocity” by Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of the country.

Despite the fact that Russia had agreed to a 12-hour pause in hostilities to allow refugees to evacuate towns and cities, the attack still took place.
The Mariupol city council, in a video posted to its Facebook page, showed a hospital that had been ravaged by bombings from Russian aircraft. These bombings fell from the sky on the city.

It was the council that said, “There has been a great deal of destruction.” According to the council, “the building of the medical facility where the children recently received treatment is completely destroyed.”

There has been a report that according to preliminary information, at least 17 people have been injured, including mothers and staff, in the attack which took place in the Donetsk region.

Zelensky reiterated that the NATO military alliance should declare a no-fly zone over Ukraine upon hearing about the attack, and he expressed his outrage at the act.

“Close the sky! Stop the killing. You have power but we seem to be losing our humanity at the moment,” he said on Telegram.

In a statement, Zelensky said, “The Russian troops attacked the maternity hospital directly. Children are under the wreckage. Atrocity! How much longer will the world stand by and overlook such atrocities?”

Zelensky later Wednesday called the strike “the final proof of the genocide taking place against the Ukrainian people.”

According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, Ukrainian forces have erected combat positions inside the hospital without providing proof. The video showed both patients and staff at the hospital after the bombing, including pregnant women who had to be carried away.

Hospital attacks have received international condemnation, with the UN saying it will follow up on the reports “urgently,” and that hospitals and health care workers should never be targeted.

CNN has identified a second site in Mariupol, less than a kilometer from the bombed-out hospital, as the target of an apparent Russian air strike.

Several images of the University and City Council Building can be seen on social media.

US defense official: Mariupol, on Ukraine’s southeast coast, has been under siege for days and has been “isolated” by Russian forces.

Mariupol is still being bombarded by the Russian military, which does not have significant forces inside the city, said the official. There have been about 1,300 civilian deaths since the Russian invasion began, two officials said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Ukraine’s foreign minister accused Russia of war crimes after taking 300,000 civilians hostage. Residents have been cut off from water and electricity for days.

“The situation in Mariupol is desperate,” Mirella Hodeib, spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), told CNN on Monday.
