Mother Jump From Bridge Leaving Toddler in Car

The mother of a 3-year-old girl allegedly jumped to her death into a canal from a bridge on the Bangkok-Chon Buri motorway late on Monday night. She left her car with her 3-year-old daughter inside on the bridge.

A highway patrol officer found the car with the toddler inside it parked on the bridge on the motorway about 1 am on Tuesday. The car was on the bridge over Klong Phra Ong Chao Chaiyachit.

Police and rescue workers were called to the scene said a three-year-old girl was sleeping in the front passenger seat.

A registration check by police found that the car belonged to Ms. Nicha Khemkornsukjit, 34. She lived in Bangkok’s Suan Luang district. Ms. Nicha’s mobile phone was also left in the car. Police used her phone to call relatives to take care of the little girl.

Mr. Prairoj Sornkaew, 47,  said he was fishing under the bridge around midnight and heard something heavy fall into the canal, causing a large splash. Soon afterward, a highway police car arrived. The officer asked about the car parked on the bridge.

Mother had relationship issues

Divers from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation were called in to start a search for the woman’s body. The woman’s mother, Ms. Pranee Montree, arrived at the scene to take care of her grandchild.

Ms. Pranee told police her daughter had family issues. She said her daughter had married a Chinese man but they had broken up and he had returned to Mainland China.

The grandmother said her daughter had hurt her granddaughter twice out of stress, and she had taken the toddler into her care.

She said early that night her daughter had called and said she would collect her daughter. Her daughter later took the toddler away in her car despite her protests.

The search for Ms. Nicha continues.
