A man in Thailand’s deep south has confessed to killing his mother. He told police he did so while high on yaba, police chief Pol Col Piyapat Thongpanlertkul told Thai media.
The suspect was identified as Mahama Buraheng, 36, who was arrested at a checkpoint on Phetkasem highway near the village of Moo 5 in Bacho district late on Monday night while fleeing on a motorcycle. A knife was found in his possession when he was detained.
Pol Col Piyapat said the police station was alerted at about 10 pm about the death of a woman at Moo 2 village in Narathiwat’s Tambon Marubo Tok, Rangae district.
Narathiwat police rushed to the house and found the victim, Adire Hayidure, 78, dead with a deep wound in her throat in a pool of blood. Her body was transported to a local hospital for an autopsy.
According to witnesses, the woman had been killed by Mr Mahama, her own son, who fled on a motorcycle.
An alert was sent to nearby checkpoints so the man could be intercepted. In the Bacho district, he was subsequently arrested at a checkpoint along the Phetkasem highway.
During initial questioning, Mr Mahama admitted to killing his mother, police said.
The police colonel said Mahama told him that he was high on yaba when he committed the crime. When he saw his mother, he believed she was someone else threatening him, causing him to slash her in the throat, killing her instantly.
A murder charge was filed against Mr Mahama.
In the early 1970s, this miniature red tablet was outlawed in Thailand. In spite of this, it continues to appear in headlines across the country.
Yaba, also known as the madness drug or Nazi speed, is a combination of stimulants. The main ingredients of the drug are caffeine and methamphetamine, or crystal meth. Drug Yaba comes in tablet form and is usually red with the letters WY imprinted on it. Those who use it most commonly smoke it off tinfoil, but it can also be ingested orally or crushed and snorted. It is also usually laced with a flavouring, most often vanilla, and gives off this scent when smoked.
