Illegal Border Crossers Putting Thailand's Tourism at Risk

The government of Thailand Monday expressed concerns over people crossing illegally into the country over natural borders which could place the reopening to tourism at risk due to covid-19 infections.

At a press briefing on Monday, a government spokesperson said that Covid-19 can be controlled for travelers arriving through airports, but not for people crossing illegally into Thailand through natural land borders.

Ms. Apisamai Srirangson, a spokeswoman for Thailand’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said that in the first week since the government’s reopening of Thailand on Nov 1 there have been 22,832 arrivals at airports. Furthermore, only 20 travelers have tested positive for Covid-19.

The largest number of arrivals into Thailand were from Germany, with 2,666 vaccinated visitors; followed by the United States (2,665); the United Kingdom (1,475); Japan (1,449); South Korea (987); Russia (949); Sweden (817); France (774); and the United Arab Emirates (565).

The arrivals included 14,278 visitors who entered Thailand’s new “Test & Go” process without quarantine. The travelers were fully vaccinated and arrived from low-risk countries at Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Koh Samui airports.

Another 7,483 vaccinated travelers also entered Thailand through the Sandbox quarantine process during the first week. Most of them, 6,710, arrived at Phuket Airport. There were another 1,071 travelers who were not fully vaccinated and entered mandatory quarantine.

“The 20 infected visitors made up just 0.09% of all arrivals,” the spokesperson said.

Thailand’s natural borders overrun

The spokesperson also said the number of infected visitors arriving by air was at a controllable level and the government was happy with the situation.

Thailand’s Tourism Authority predicts about 300,000 visitors per month will enter th Kingdom for the last two months of the year. The Authority also hoped that travelers would distribute income to many areas in the Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s Prime Minister has raised concerns over the illegal entry of people through natural borders. Because more than 2,800 illegal migrants have been arrested over the past week for illegal entry.

Furthermore, health officials know that illegal migrant workers were responsible for the Covid outbreaks of the delta variant that spread rapidly throughout Thailand. Especially at markets in Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, and Chiang Mai.

The Prime Minister has urged businesses owners to hire only legal migrant workers and assure they comply with disease control measures.
