Hurricane Fiona Has Cut Off All Electricity In Puerto Rico

(CTN News) _ Fiona made landfall in southwestern Puerto Rico on Sunday afternoon, knocking out the entire island’s electricity grid.

On a storm-battered island, the Category 1 hurricane was expected to cause dangerous landslides and heavy flooding.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm was centered 15 miles south of Mayagüez, a community on Puerto Rico’s west coast.

As of 9 p.m., it was moving northwest at a speed of 9 mph with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.

Puerto Rico is expected to receive 12 to 16 inches of rain from Fiona, while eastern and southern regions could receive up to 25 inches.

According to PowerOutage.US, over 1,400,000 customers have lost electricity as a result of a transmission grid failure caused by the current hurricane.

Electricity service on Puerto Rico could take several days to restore, according to Luma Energy, the island’s private utility.

The Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, posted on Facebook that the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority and Luma Energy responders are “active and ready to assist when conditions permit.”

The storm will move toward the Dominican Republic by Monday

By Monday, Fiona is expected to move towards the Dominican Republic after staying around Puerto Rico through Sunday evening.

As of Tuesday, it is expected to travel east of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

According to officials monitoring the storm, the flash flooding will be “life threatening and catastrophic” across Puerto Rico and the eastern Dominican Republic.

In the southern coast of the island, a storm surge combined with the tide could cause water levels to rise up to three feet.

In the French territory of Guadeloupe, Fiona has damaged roads, destroyed properties, and killed people, according to Sylvie Gustave Dit Duflo, an official for the region.

Additionally, parts of the Dominican Republic, northern Haiti, and the southern end of the Bahamas areexpected to be adversely affected by the storm.
