Police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the sexually explicit videos he blackmailed a 12-year-old girl to send him through online games.
Thailand’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force say that they arrested Mr Thanawan Saijai on Saturday and seized his mobile phone.
In addition to possessing child pornography and sexual exploitation, the man has been charged with extortion and enticing a minor for indecent purposes. No further details have been released.
Last November, the victim’s parents filed a complaint with police in northern Thailand’s Chiang Mai city, requesting officers to arrest the victim.
According to police, the victim met the suspect online through Free Fire, an app for mobile phones. He convinced the victim to send him explicit videos, which he later used to blackmail the victim’s parents.
A spokesperson for Thailand’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force said that Mr Thanawan fled Chiang Mai then fled to Buri Ram. He was charged with possession of child pornography, sexual exploitation, extortion and enticing a minor for indecent purposes after being arrested.
In light of the fact that children are spending an increasing amount of time online, playing online games as a result of the pandemic, police advise parents to pay closer attention to them.
It is possible that they will encounter inappropriate content or sexual predators while browsing the internet for online learning or just for fun during their leisure time. Furthermore, they can also lure children through an online game.
It is not uncommon for suspects to pose as model scouts for online games in order to trick victims into sending them explicit photos for recruitment purposes, police said.
