3.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Chiang Mai, Thailand

A small 3.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Fang district of northern Thailand’s Chiang Mai province early on Wednesday. No damage was reported.

Chiang Mai’s Meteorological office reported that the earthquake occurred at 1:03am with the epicenter about 4 kilometers deep in Tambon Mae Kha in Fang district, 71 kilometers west of Chiang Rai province.

The minor earthquake was felt in the Fang and Chai Prakan districts of Chiang Mai Province. There had been no reports of damage.

Officials from the Regional Irrigation Office inspected four dams under and they were unaffected by the minor earthquake.

On July 22, the Meteorological Department said a 6.4 earthquake was felt just after midnight in Myanmar about 87 kilometers to the Northeast of Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district.

Several milder quakes were registered later, with the last 5.3-magnitude earthquake recorded at 5.22am.

The division reported that the earthquake could be felt in Chiang Rai’s Muang, Mae Chan, Chiang Khong and Chiang Saen districts and in Chiang Mai’s Muang district.

Meanwhile, due to heavy rains in the area, water levels in the Ping River and feeder streams were high on Wednesday morning.

At Navarat bridge in Chiang Mai township, the river was 3.11 metres deep, a few centimeters below the 3.70m spilling point.

Chiang Mai residents had been warned to closely monitor the situation.
