Police in Bangkok report discovering a retired man living alone with over 30 dogs dead, and his dogs had begun to feed on his the dead man body due to starvation. Police estimate he had been dead for over a week.
On July 27, police officer from Bangkok’s Nimit Mai Police Station reported discovering the body of a 62 year-old man in a two-story house in Khlong Sam Wa District of Bangkok.
According to the Thairath upon their arrival they discovered over 30 dogs inside the house with garbage strewn everywhere and several small dogs in shabby condition. They reported dog feces were scattered everywhere throughout the home.
Forensic police identified the deceased as Mr. Attapol, aged 62, as the homeowner. He was found dead beside his bed on the second floor, with no signs of assault. His left leg had been gnawed to the bone by dogs surrounding him.
Forensic examiners estimated Mr. Attapol had been dead for at least a week.
Mr. Sompong, a 53-year-old neighbor who reported the incident, said he became suspicious when Mr. Attapol’s car remained parked in front of the house for weeks. He said Mr. Attapols daily routine of driving out for groceries.
He said worried he rang the doorbell and got no response, seeing lights on with the dogs barking inside, he alerted the authorities.
Police said the mans body was sent for examination at the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Police General Hospital in Bangkok. They also contacted The Voice Foundation, led by famous model Chonlada Mekrat, to take care of the dogs in the house.
Staff from The Voice Foundation place dogs in cages to remove them from the house. Many were in needed medical care. Dr. Benjalak Leeprapaiwong a Veterinarian with The Voice Foundation team was on hand to examine the dogs in the house finding them all malnourished.
He said two of dogs were particularly weak and would requiring blood tests and other health checks. Some dogs had eye problems and would need continuous treatment for 2 weeks to a month.
Dr. Benjalak said all dogs were in a concerning condition and they would need to check if there are any further complications besides malnutrition, as they were kept in unhygienic conditions with a lot of accumulated dog feces in the rooms.
Staff from The Voice Foundation place dogs in cages to remove them from the house for medical care and would later to find them new homes.
Supawadee Sritassanakan, an officer from The Voice Foundation, said that in 2021, a veterinarian caring for dogs at Attapol’s house asked the foundation to inspect the house because dogs were dying every week.
The team inspected with police and livestock officers and found 44-46 dogs living in the home. During that inspection, the foundation offered to neuter over 20 dogs to help manage the population, but Attapol refused.
Mr. Attapol then made an arrangement with the foundation that if he died, he would entrust the dogs to the foundation’s care. The foundation is now seeking people interested in adopting the dogs.
