Detroit Lions Set To Sign DJ Chark To 1-Year $10M Deal
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that according to the Lions, they have agreed to terms with former Jaguars wide receiver DJ Chark on a one-year contract. According to Ian Rapoport, the deal is worth $10 million fully guaranteed with the potential to get as high as $12 million.
In recent weeks, the Lions have made it well known that they are on the receiver market, specifically looking for an outside receiver that can be the team’s ‘X’ receiver. Having a height of 6’4 and weighing 198 pounds, DJ Chark fits exactly into that mold-and he brings 4.3-speed with him.
In 2018, DJ Chark was regarded as one of the best receivers in the league as he caught 73 passes for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns. Over the past two seasons, DJ Chark has unfortunately been plagued with injuries. After fracturing his ankle early in the season of 2021, he missed three games in the 2020 season and only played four games in the following season.
In light of the fact that DJ Chark’s contract is just for one year, this shouldn’t alter Detroit’s plans for bringing in a receiver during the upcoming draft. As a fully-guaranteed $10 million deal, you can bet that DJ Chark will be heavily featured in Detroit’s offense over the next few months, which will also feature Amon-Ra St. Brown, Josh Reynolds, and Quintez Cephus at the wide receiver position.
It would appear on the surface that with such a high amount of guaranteed money, this would likely put them out of contention to sign Allen Robinson in free agency. It should be noted, however, that as Erik Schlitt pointed out, the Lions still have upwards of $9 million to spend in free agency. There is still a chance that the Lions could make another splash.
