Buddhist Monk Rescued After Falling 50 Meters into a Cave

A Buddhist monk has been rescued from a mountain cave in northern Thailand after he fell about 50 metres when a rope ladder broke as he was entering the cave to meditate.

Phra Thada, 29, had travelled from a temple in Bangkok for Buddhism meditation in the cave, on Khao Kluk Klee mountain in Tak Province.

On Saturday, the Pithakkan Foundation was informed by people from the village near the mountain cave, that a monk had suffered a serious fall and injured himself.

Villagers said the young Buddhist monk was climbing down into the cave when the rope ladder he was using broke. He fell nearly 50 metres to the cave floor.

Rescuers rushed to the Khao Kluk Klee mountain cave with rescue equipment and emergency lights to begin their rescue before night fell.

Phra Thada was brought out of the cave about 3:30 am on Sunday after a gruelling 10-hour effort by the rescue team. The young Buddhist monk suffered serious hip and leg injuries.

According to villagers, the cave was a popular place for monks, novices, and nuns seeking solitude for Buddhism meditation in the wilds of Tak province.

Buddhist Monk Hosts His Own Funeral

In the northern province of Phitsanulok, a Buddhist monk invited people to his funeral. Despite being alive and well, the abbot of a local temple decided to conduct a ritual to show his followers that death is a normal part of life.

The funeral at the Pothiyan Temple was conducted in accordance with Thai Buddhist traditions. Even a coffin with a fake body made of banana trees was burned in the temple’s crematory. As the coffin was transported to the crematory, 55 monks chanted and prayed.

According to The Thaiger, the locals were dressed in black. On the sign was a picture of a monk named Sunthorn Rojanakhun, with his birthday, 23 October 1968, and his “death date,” 23 October 2048. (He anticipates dying at age 80.)

The funeral of Sunthorn was intended to normalize thoughts of death. According to him, since locals have already held a funeral for him, he will not need one when he dies. Additionally, each attendee received 5 kilograms of rice as a gift.

Some residents plan to buy lottery tickets that match the abbot’s age.
