Army Sergeant Kills 2 Fellow Soldiers at War College
An army sergeant-major shot and killed two fellow soldiers and wounded another at the Army War College of the Army Training Command in Bangkok on Wednesday morning.
Military police were called to the Army War College at about 8:45am. An Army spokesperson said the shooter was mentally unstable and had threatened to kill 10 people.
He was identified as Sgt Maj Yongyut Mangkornkim, 59, an administrative clerk at the Army War College.
Military police said Sgt Maj Yongyut walked into the administration office and opened fire with a handgun.
He killed Sgt Maj Nopparat Intarasunthorn and Sgt Maj Prakan Sinsong and wounded Sgt Maj Yongyuth Panyanuwat. All were administrative clerks at the Army War College.
Sgt Maj Yongyuth was rushed to Phramongkutklao Hospital for emergency treatment.
After the shooting, Army Sgt Maj Yongyut left the college building and was immediately arrested by military police waiting in front of the building.
The Army spokesperson said, Sgt Maj Yongyut was under stress due to health problems. In the past, he had been diagnosed with mental illness.
Military Police handling the case said the army would like to extend its condolences to the families of those killed and injured. It is a big loss for both the army and those families,” they said.
In February 2020, a soldier in Nakhon Ratchasima province shot 31 people and wounded scores more before he was killed by commandos.
Gunman Sgt Maj 1st Class Jakrapanth Thomma, 32, engaged in a debt dispute with a senior officer and the military brass portrayed him as a rogue soldier in an effort to conceal the debt dispute.
