Officials in the Southern California shootings have refrained from commenting on a potential motivation.

Unlike the ordinary perpetrators of the horrific mass shootings that have grown commonplace in the United States, the suspects in both instances are men in their retirement years.

A shooter opened fire on workers at Mountain Mushroom Farm, where he had previously worked, and Concord Farms.

Which was approximately a mile away, on Monday in Half Moon Bay.

Chunli Zhao, a 67-year-old suspect, was apprehended after being discovered sitting in his car outside a sheriff’s office. According to the authorities, he arrived to surrender.

According to San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus, the shooter targeted Hispanic and Asian Americans, leaving seven dead and one injured.

According to Corpus, all of the available information “points to this being a case of workplace violence.”

According to court documents that the San Francisco Chronicle obtained, Zhao had threatened a colleague.

A San Jose restaurant employee who claimed Zhao had beaten him and threatened to kill him in 2013 requested and was granted a restraining order, the newspaper said on Tuesday. The court’s ruling is no longer valid.

Zhao was charged with deliberate and premeditated murder, attempted first-degree murder, and firing a gun with an enhancement for “most serious offenses,” according to the San Mateo County jail.

Zhao was scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Wednesday at 1:30 pm at the Hall of Justice in Redwood City, where he was anticipated to be officially charged.

President Joe Biden reiterated his plea for Congress to outlaw assault weapons in a statement on Tuesday.

He declared that while we wait for further information about these massacres, “stronger action is needed to address the epidemic of gun violence plaguing America.”

Intense shootings in Half Moon Bay, a seaside city

Detectives were still looking into the Saturday night shooting at Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park, east of downtown Los Angeles, which happened in the middle of the city’s Lunar New Year celebrations when news of the Half Moon Bay shooting first surfaced.

Huu Can Tran, 72, was the shooter who killed 10 people and injured 10 others at the Star Ballroom, where he was a frequent visitor, according to the authorities. In the hospital, an additional patient passed away from their injuries.

The owner of the nearby second dance club took Tran’s weapon away, preventing him from doing more harm. Tran then drove to the second dance club. In a white cargo van, he took off.

He shot himself in the head after being cornered by police in Torrance, south of Los Angeles, about 12 hours later.

CRIME RECORD

Tributes from kin and friends had already begun to flood in when the Los Angeles County Coroner revealed the whole list of Monterey Park deceased on Tuesday.

That dancing studio, a sanctuary for residents looking to exercise and mingle, was frequented by many victims.

The family of Valentino Marcos Alvero released a statement in which they recalled the Filipino man as a devoted grandfather and “the life of any party.”

According to the Taiwanese consulate in Los Angeles and the Chinese consulate, two Taiwanese fisherman and several Chinese citizens were among the 11 casualties.

Hilda Solis, a supervisor for the county, said it was the deadliest mass shooting in Los Angeles County history.

In contrast, the worst shooting in California history resulted in the deaths of 21 people at a McDonald’s restaurant in San Diego in 1984.

The age of the suspects in the two most recent shootings, one in his late 60s and the other in his early 70s, was also noteworthy.

Only one mass shooting, a retired miner who murdered five people in Kentucky in 1981, was committed by someone aged 70 or older, according to a database of 185 major shootings kept by the nonprofit Violence Project between 1966 and 2022.

On Monday, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna informed reporters that investigators had retrieved a large-capacity ammunition magazine and 42 bullet casings from the dancing school.

He claimed that a check of the suspect’s mobile home in the town of Hemet, 80 miles east of Los Angeles, found up a rifle, electronic equipment, and other signs that Tran was producing homemade weapon silencers.

Numerous rounds of ammunition and a handgun were recovered by police from the residence and his car, respectively.

According to Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese, authorities are looking into unsubstantiated claims that jealousy or marital problems may have been the cause of the violence.
