Thailand Celebrates Queen Sirikit's 81st Birthday 1

BANGKOK  – Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Monday led cabinet ministers and military top brass in conveying well wishes to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 81 birthday that also falls on National Mother’s Day.

The prime minister and her delegation arrived at the Grand Palace at 9am to sign their name in well wishes guest books for the Queen, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.

Members of the public queued up to sing at the Sala Sahathai Samakhom Hall in the palace opened for the public until 5pm on the day.

Across the country, Thais took part in alms-giving ceremonies and prayed for the queen’s well-being.

Thousands have thronged the streets for live concerts, fairs and other street events.

In Bangkok, Bangkok governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra led city officials and the public in presenting alms to 182 monks at the City Hall.

In rural areas, doctors and nurses provided free checkups for villagers, including at the southern Trang Hospital.

This year’s event also sees the selection of 20 outstanding mother-child pairs to help promote family tourism, a joint campaign between the Phang Nga Tourism Business Association and Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Among other highlights of this year’s celebration included a 182-km charity cycle event where cyclists will ride through Nakhon Sawan, Chai Nat and Uthai Thani before ending across Chao Phraya River in Bangkok.
