CHIANG RAI – Thailand’s Health Department Director-General Pornthep Siriwanarangsan has warned beer garden operators to strictly abide by the public health laws regarding the sales of alcohol in an effort to prevent brawling and injury among New Year merry makers.

General Pornthep Siriwanarangsan disclosed that the Ministry of Public Health and local administrative bodies would together inspect beer gardens at New Year celebration sites throughout the country to make sure the operators were aware of and follow the laws.

According to General Pornthep, stringent precautionary measures must be applied to entertainment venues serving alcoholic drinks as a large number of New Year merrymakers are likely to gather at such places where alcohol consumption often leads to brawls. Dr. Pornthep expects the measures to also prevent drunken revelers from creating nuisance to others.

He also warned that those wanting to set up a beer garden must acquire a permit first and must also comply with the relevant laws as well as safety and hygienic rules and regulations. Illegal operators, if caught, will face a fine of 10,000 baht or a jail term of up to six months or both.

Meanwhile, The Command Centre for Drugs Elimination of the North and Eastern Border (CCDE-NEB) are gearing up on the narcotics prevention measures for the New Year’s holidays.

The CCDE-NEB Chief Maj.Gen Thanya Kiatisarn has revealed the center’s narcotics counter measures during the New Year’s holidays.

According to the intelligence service of the Second Army Area, there is a reasonable amount of amphetamine pending to be smuggled to Thailand across border. The drugs are expected to be transported to the Bangkok area along with the inbound commute of people after the holidays.
Lt.Gen Thawat Sookplang has urged all officials to perform their anti-smuggling operations more strictly, such as patrolling, person and vehicle inspections at border-crossings, placing checkpoints along the roads, as well as to perform intelligence operations more discreetly.
