Songkran 4th Day Road Toll 2,232 Traffic Accidents, 237 Killed, 2,322 Injured

BANGKOK – The government’s Road Safety Operation Center reported that from April 11 to 14 of Songkrans “Seven Dangerous Day” there were 2,232 traffic accidents which killed 237 people and injured 2,322 others.

On April 14 alone there were 567 traffic accidents which killed 59 people and injured 598 others. Drink-driving was the most common cause of the accidents, resulting in 42.86% of all incidents while speeding caused 25.40% of all accidents.

Motorcycles were involved in 78.31% of the accidents. Most of the incidents, 67.55%, happened on straight roads and the most common hours of the accidents were from 4.01pm to 8pm when 29.10% of all accidents happened.

From April 11 to 14, there were 2,232 traffic accidents in which 237 people were killed and 2,322 others were injured. The highest number of accidents, 81, was in Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

The number of vehicles impounded from drunk motorists during the past four days of the Songkran holidays reached 3,695, with 15,616 driving licences seized.

Col Sirichan Nga-thong, deputy spokeswoman of the National Council for Peace and Order, said on Monday that authorities impounded 1,401 vehicles from drunk drivers on Sunday alone. Of the total, 1,056 were motorcycles.

Over the past four days — April 11-14 — a total of 3,695 vehicles were impounded from drunk drivers, and legal action taken against 113,939 traffic law violators, including 69,984 motorcyclists and 43,954 drivers of private vehicles and public transportation vehicles.

The vehicles seized over the four-day period comprised 2,741 motorcycles and 954 other vehicles. Authorities have confiscated 15,616 driving licences from violators, said Col Sirichan.

Meanwhile, Chayapol Thitisak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said  7 people were injured in a crash on a Bangkok expressway when a car drove against the traffic flow on Monday.

Jor Sor 100 traffic radio reported that the accident involved three cars on the outbound section of Sriratch expressway near the Srinakarin exit.

A video clip posted on its website showed a white Honda driving against the traffic flow towards the expressway at the Srinakrin exit.
