Monk Arrested and Disrobed for Groping Young Man’s Groin

Phra Pramitr, 54, came under criticism after a video surfaced showing him hugging a young shop employee. He then touched the groin of the shop employee, which also sparked the controversy.

Police in central Thailand arrested a monk, allegedly seen on video groping a young man’s groin. He was charge of indecent behavior.

Police identified the monk as Phra Khru Wichian Panyaporn, known as Phra Pamitr. The Monk was abbot of Wat Chom Sri in Phetchabun Province. Thai media reported he was apprehended at a temple in Lop Sak district by police, Tuesday morning. The abbot did not resist.

He went to Phetchabun provincial police office for interrogation, donned in his saffron robes.

Police later took the abbot to Wat Mahathat, where he was disrobed, by provincial chief monk, Phra Patcharodom

Police took the disrobed monk to the Muang police station to face charges on indecent assault.

Phra Pramitr, 54, came under criticism after a video surfaced showing him hugging a young shop employee. He then touched the groin of the shop employee, which also sparked the controversy.

On Sunday, about 100 disgruntled local residents rallied at the temple and demanded the monks removal.

The shop employee, 23, filed a complaint with local police accusing the senior monk of indecent assault. The provincial court later approved a warrant for Phra Pamitr’s arrest.

Canadian Monk Disrobed for Sexual Relations

A Canadian monk who lived in the mountains of  Northern Thailand was also disrobed in August of this year. After admitting to sexual relations with a woman. Phra Julien Apataro had spent almost 20 years living as a monk. On a remote hillside in the Sop Moei district of Mae Hong Son province.

He admitted on a televised news show on Friday to having had sexual relations with women.

Apologizing to Thai people over his indiscipline, the Canadian monk said that he would leave the monkhood.

Mae Hong Son’s governor told the Nation that if Phra Julien had committed the indiscipline as reported, he must be disrobed. He said the monk’s alleged actions also tarnish the religion in Thailand.

Phra Julien first came to Thailand at age 18 as a Canadian exchange student and became interested in practicing meditation. He returned to Thailand in 1998 and then practiced the Eight Precept principle on his own for a year.

Phra Julien became ordained as a Monk in Chinag Mai.

Villagers in Sop Moei a district of Mae Hong Son Province also built a small monastery for him.
