47-year-old Thavichai Nathongbo was thought to have been delirious after drinking beer and consuming a narcotics pill

PRAWET – A two-year-old boy is dead after a man stabbed him while holding him hostage.

The man, a cleaner identified as 47-year-old Thavichai Nathongbo was thought to have been delirious after drinking beer and consuming a narcotics pill.

The boy was stabbed several times as he was held hostage in front of police and many onlookers in Bangkok’s Prawet district yesterday afternoon, reported Thailand’s The Nation. The boy, Thanapat Ketkaew, was already unconscious when police arrived at Number One Cleaning Service, a three-storey building in Soi Chalermprakiat.

Police had to retreat to form an alternate rescue plan as Thavichai stabbed the boy every time someone tried to get close to rescue him.

When Thavichai appraoched the police to get a phone that he had requested for during talks, they charged forward and detained him.

Thanapat was rushed to Sirindhorn Hospital, but died from eight severe stab-wounds to the throat and torso and excessive blood loss.

Thavichai told police that he worked at the company for seven months and had been given a “white pill” by a woman the night before, which made him feel sick, so his employer, the boy’s mother, told him to stay at the office with the boy. He drank a bottle of beer and was about to sleep on the second floor of the building when he suddenly felt that someone wanted to kill him, causing him to hold the boy hostage.

An initial drug test on Thavichai showed that he had taken a narcotic substance. Police also found out he had been jailed for five years for selling heroin.

Thanapat’s parents, Thanapol and Napakkan Ketkaew, were shocked at what happened and overwhelmed with grief. They went to see their son for the last time at the hospital’s emergency room.

Napakkan tearfully said that she left her baby boy at home with the Thaivichai, as she had to bring a team of cleaning maids to work at a school. Twenty minutes later, she was told the man was holding her boy at knife point.

She said the suspect had no family or relatives and she only knew that he drank beer, but did not know about his alleged use of drugs. She said she also has a one-year-old girl who stays with her mother in elsewhere in Roi Et.
