BANGKOK – The Bangkok North Municipal Court has sentenced Phanuwat Singsahut, 26, a motorcycle taxi driver to 18 months in prison, after he was found guilty of brutal torture and killing of nine cats.

He was arrested by police in July this year after the “Watchdog Thailand” Facebook page posted complaints by animal lovers that the cats under his care were tortured and killed.

Investigation by police led to his apartment on Soi Mahatthai 13 in Wang Thonglang district where carcasses of the cats were dumped in the apartment’s bin.

Phanuwat pleaded guilty to the charge, saying he sought the cats for raise from a poster on “Homeless Cat Helpers Club” Facebook page.

The club became suspicious after Phanuwat could not be contacted and hence could not follow up if these homeless cats were well or ill-treated by him.

It then sought police help to search his apartment room.

Phanuwat was then arrested and charged separately for each case of brutal torture and killing of each cat.

At today’s hearing the court handed down the highest penalty on him under the Anti Animal Cruelty Act 2557.

He was given  four months for each case he was charged, amounted to a combined 36 months in jail.

But as he pleaded guilty to all charges, the jail term was then commuted to 18 months, with no suspension.

He was then escorted to the court’s detention centre pending bail.
