How to Find a Job as a Student: Tips That Will Help You Land a Job

With student life often comes financial struggle, and this can make it difficult for students to find the motivation to search for a job. However, in spite of your hectic course load and homework assignments, there are ways you can make time to look for employment that is practical and worthwhile. It might seem like finding an ideal position will be impossible while you juggle your studies with other responsibilities, but getting your foot in the door is more attainable than you think. Here’s how to start looking for jobs as a student:

1) Be proactive

Don’t sit around and wait for companies or even fellow students to hand out all the jobs you seek. Actively search for opportunities and be proactive about sending your CV to a company or person you believe will best suit your qualifications, experience, and skillset. Being active also means making sure that you are on the ball with applying for any new job that comes along – don’t leave it to the last minute!

2) Research

Before spending time looking online for a job, investigate the companies themselves. If you’re enticed by an ad of a business offering internships, know what they do? Do you appreciate their product or services? Are there any opportunities available through key contacts? If so, apply as soon as possible, so your application stands out from the crowd. The research a recruiter does on a potential candidate is often the difference between getting a job and not.

3) Use your network (friends, family members, teachers, lecturers, etc.)

Who do you know who can help you get a foot in the door? Learn how to use your current network efficiently – ask a friend if they have any contacts that might be able to assist you with finding an internship or part-time work. This way, you can gain direct experience before starting on applications for positions advertised online. Most students don’t realize how much they already know about their friends and acquaintances; once you learn how to tap into this resource (which won’t cost you anything), it will make the process of looking for student jobs far easier.

4) Apply for anything you are remotely interested in

What is the point of being selective about a job before you’ve even applied? You may not be passionate about sales or marketing, but if there’s an opening at a company that interests you, apply. The key to finding relevant work experience early on in your career is through trial and error, so don’t dismiss opportunities out of hand just because they aren’t 100% perfect.

5) Don’t forget about your digital footprint

Employers will do their research on potential applicants with ease nowadays – make sure yours is clean by removing any content that could be deemed unpleasant or risky. Your digital footprint can lead hiring managers to question your character after they discover what kind of person you are outside of the workplace, so make sure you are prepared by keeping your social media channels clean.

6) Stay up-to-date with industry news

Make it a priority to be informed about current events in the industry that you’re most interested in. This means reading articles and following influencers on social media accounts for tips and tricks that will help you gain experience if you haven’t already landed your first role yet.

7) Befit (British educational institutions placement scheme)

Search online for any relevant opportunities available through BEFIT – this is an initiative that supports students who want to gain experience working with businesses.

8) Student Enterprise

This is an organization that supports students who want to start their own business or find work with other student-run organizations. They host regular events where you can meet like-minded people and discuss how to market your services, so make sure you check back online regularly for updates.

9) Social media

Don’t underestimate the power of social media when it comes to looking for jobs as a student – there are plenty of platforms out there dedicated solely to offering job opportunities, whether it’s through campus advisers advertising part-time roles at local companies or even online businesses hiring virtual assistants. You can also use social medias as your work. Get inspired by girls on our website making their livings out of social media platform!

Follow these tips and you will find your dream job as a student as soon as possible
