How Residential Addiction Treatment in Thailand Can Help Turn the Tables on Addiction

With drug use on the rise due to Covid-19 pandemic pressures, people are increasingly turning to Thailand for high standards of intensive treatment and low overhead costs

Drug use is on the rise worldwide following the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic, and more people are turning to residential treatment at a Thailand rehab center to overcome their addictions.

According to a recent UNODC report, more than 275 million people globally reported using drugs in 2020.

The scale of the substance abuse problem has driven both availability and innovation in treatment options, as more people seek help in regaining their health and making a full recovery.

Live-in treatment is intensive, with participants spending their entire stay solely focused on recovery from addiction.

Residential treatment typically offers a range of services on site, such as individual therapy, group sessions, and wellness practices.

Additionally, these centres focus on creating a space that is removed from triggers and daily stressors, and often will provide onsite medical assistance to address any urgent health needs.

What to Look for in Addiction Rehab in Thailand

Medically Assisted Detox

Though recent years have seen an increase in residential facility openings in response to the addiction crisis, not all centres offer the same services.

For those struggling with drug or alcohol abuse, choosing an alcohol rehab in Thailand that offers professional medical assistance onsite is critical, especially during detox.

While detox is a necessary step in beginning addiction recovery, it can be dangerous if done without medical supervision.

Prioritising a treatment facility that offers 24-hour medical assistance with trained medical professionals for alcohol detox in Thailand is critical in ensuring a safe environment for recovery.

Accreditation

Most countries require residential treatment centers to meet certain criteria in order to be issued a local operating license.

However, high-quality service providers prefer to adhere to global best practices and international standards of care.

Potential clients can enquire as to the accreditation and/or licensing of a facility to learn more about how Thailand rehab centres comply with these safety standards, and how often they are audited.

Value for Money

Most people considering drug treatment will be concerned about cost, and residential treatment centres are often more expensive than other treatment options.

However, some centres accept medical insurance to cover treatment, which can greatly reduce the overall fees.

Another option is going to a rehab abroad, one based in a country with lower overhead costs such as Thailand.

Thailand rehabs can offer high standards of medical care and top-tier services at a significantly reduced cost compared to Western facilities.

Residential treatment centres should be transparent about what the price tag covers, and be able to help clients navigate their payment options.

Drug rehab Thailand costs one third of the price charged by Western facilities and can still offer high standards of medical care and top-tier services.

Going to Thailand to Get Help

For some people struggling with addiction, total separation from their triggers is a necessary factor in recovery.

Michael, whose last name is withheld for anonymity, came to Thailand from the US seeking residential treatment for addiction and mental health issues.

“I needed to come to a completely alien environment, something I had no familiarity with…I always had an interest in Thailand and the atmosphere here,” he said in a recent interview.

While he credits the therapy and wellness services available at his residential rehab for helping him understand and progress through his addiction and practise self-care, he also emphasised the importance of individual commitment to recovery.

“The real work is up to the clients,” he explained. “They need to be just about as serious about getting better in their recovery as they were with their seriousness towards gravitating towards drugs in the past.”
