(CTN News) – Here’s our honest Writers Work review, where we’ll tell you what Writers Work is, what it’s like, and if it’s worth it.

Writers Work is a platform that connects freelance writers with writing jobs.

Although Writers Work uses a weird marketing strategy, it’s legit and not a scam. You can’t be too careful, though, with so many scams out there.

Writers Work was a controversial online service in 2019. People complained about the signup process and refund policy. The company got an F rating from the Better Business Bureau.

Here’s what happened:

Refund Issues

The company advertises a special signup fee of just USD 47.00. After signing up, some users couldn’t get a refund. After some time and many bad reviews, the company finally got back to them and solved the refund issue. Since then, the customer service has improved a lot.

A Bizarre Marketing Strategy

The signup fee itself is another reason why people still worry. It’s like the discounted signup fee never changes. Writers Work offers 50% off or (never-ending) early bird pricing, so people are still concerned. If you want access to Writers Work for Life, it’s a one-time payment of USD 47.00.

What Is Writers Work?

Writers Work isn’t a company that hires writers directly; it’s a resource for writers to find jobs advertised by other companies.

The Writers Work site has various freelance writing jobs, including writing for content agencies, blogging, copywriting, and social media.

Writers can manage all aspects of their writing jobs from the comfort of their homes, including communication with clients and payment. Once the job is done, writers get paid.

Writers Work is a one-stop shop for freelance writers. I found everything I needed with the job listings, writing tools, and training modules.

Fee Structure

The platform has a lot to offer for $47.00, but it can be tricky to figure out.

There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee and fewer complaints about refund issues. You can also pay per month, which I wouldn’t recommend since it doesn’t match the lifetime fee.


Subscribers get a list of publications seeking pitches, an online text editor, a portfolio area, and a Writers Work “University”.

Job Listings

One of the best features for full-time freelance writers is the job listing. Writers Work compiles a list of freelance writing jobs from around the world. The user can filter it by type, source, and pay.

When searching for a job, the keyword search filter allows you to search for specific words. You can save searches and be notified when upcoming freelance writing jobs match your preferences.

Despite how I like the job listings feature, my colleague said she doesn’t like how the filtering system only shows a few jobs, not a whole bunch. You won’t find many jobs in the job search if you use too many filters since Writers Work only pulls job listings from a few sites like Indeed and Problogger.

Having the ability to filter the newest job postings would be handy. This would allow users to filter out old posts. Nevertheless, subscribers can get notifications whenever new jobs are posted, which is awesome.

Submissions Section

Freelancers can pitch themselves to publications in the Submissions section, which explains what publications want and their publication entails.

The site has many jobs, from entry-level to big publications looking for writers. There are different salaries for different jobs. Some writers are paid per word, and some are paid per article.

You can find topics that match your interests, like in the Jobs Listing section. From there, you can add the listing to your projects. You can also email some publications directly to send your pitch. You can also submit work to the publications’ websites by clicking the submission entry.

The Writers Work website’s submission page got me many freelance writing opportunities when I tested it. For my first 2000-word article, I got 80 dollars, instructions on what the publications wanted, how much I’d get paid per hour, per article, and 100 words.

It’s great for freelancers getting regular work and building a steady income.

Job Listings vs. Submission Section

As I researched the job listings and submission sections, I got confused, so I looked deeper to find out the difference between them. You can find writing jobs in the Job Listings, whether a freelancer, part-time writer, or full-time writer. You apply for these jobs with your resume and an application.

This section helps you pitch ideas to publications. Instead of applying, you pitch what you can offer and why they should publish your work.

Project Management System

To help freelancers stay organized, Writers Work offers a personal project management system, which I find helpful. It is a great tool for writers.

If you’re starting, you might like to try out the project management system. If you’re already a freelance writer with a specific way of staying organized, you will probably not use the Project Management System.

The Project Management System tracks your time spent on each project and helps you stay organized. You can also add sub-tasks to help you stay organized.

The old system I’m used to is still my favourite, even though I’ve tried a couple of different systems on different websites. Those who’ve never used Writers Work will probably love it, but it distracts from writing.

I like how straightforward the interface is, but it’s only useful if the writer regularly uses the system. It’s up to the writer whether the system is helpful or stressful.

Text Editor

As I was using the text editor, my first thought was, why? Why use this when you can use Microsoft Word, Pages, or Google Docs?

Here is the difference:

Almost like Google Docs, Writers Work updates work in real-time. It’s got a readability score level and score that’s automatically updated as you write. You can keep your writing on track by keeping it from being too easy or hard to read.

The readability score is a great feature that helps you focus on your audience. I also liked the character counters, word counters, and sentence counters.

There’s a spell checker and a way to hyperlink within your document, too, just like other text editors. The Text Editor integrates seamlessly with other Writers Work features, like the Project Management System. It tracks how long you spend on the document you’re writing so you can tie it to a project.

You can activate background sounds of the Hogwarts library and outdoor serenity whenever you highlight a word that links to synonyms or dictionary definitions.

If you’re a new freelance writer, the Text Editor feature might be awesome for you; however, if you’re an experienced writer, you probably use Grammarly already.


Writers Work’s portfolio feature is fundamental and probably my favourite for entry-level freelancers. It’s where you show off your writing skills, add a profile image, a cover image, a title, and a description, and include as many portfolio clips as you want. Starters learn how to build a good portfolio with this feature, saving them a ton of time.

This feature is pretty basic, but it’s all you need. If you want to build a portfolio that gets you more work, use this feature. It’s simple, but it’ll show off your work beautifully.

With Writers Work, you don’t have to rely on other portfolio websites to link your work. This feature gets better and better every day. Linking your social media platforms is one of the newest updates.

When your portfolio is done, you can sign up for the Writers Marketplace, where freelancers can advertise their writing skills, showcase their portfolios, and list their services. You can decide if your portfolio is visible and turn it off or on at any time.

Putting all my work together was so much fun since I was always too lazy to make a proper portfolio.

“University” Feature

You can learn how to become a freelance writer through the Writers Work University from the comfort of your home without going to a university.

You can find video lessons and a blog. You can watch the videos at your own pace. Writers Work keeps track of how many modules you’ve completed. It’s like taking an online writing class. For more information, you can download supplemental materials and keep notes.

You can filter the blog posts by intended audience, even though it doesn’t technically fall under the University Feature. Bloggers write for both writers and employers. “How to Hire a Grant Writer” and “Top Benefits of Guest Blogging” are some of the writing topics for employers.

My Opinion of the University Feature

My favourite writing topics for writers are “From 9-5 to Freelance: Making a Smooth Transition” and “What Exactly is a White Paper.”

I like the University feature because it’s different and interesting. It’s a service that provides materials for pitching and copywriting. Writers Work has features like “Time Tracking and Project Management” and “Publishing Your First Article.”

The course will give you a quick idea of what you’ve covered and how you’re progressing if you’re planning to do writing as your main income. Even though it doesn’t have a lot of content, if you’re a newbie, you’ll get everything you need to get started. You could scroll through and just compete for the modules you’re interested in if you’re a more advanced freelancer.

Other courses are more in-depth and have more content, but it’s a nice addition to this platform that already has a bunch.


I think USD 47.00 is not a bad price for what you get. Lifetime membership gives users many resources to kick-start or advance their freelance writing career.

There’s nothing new about Writers Work, but it’s a great package for freelancers dipping their toes into the writing world.

I’m not sure if I’ll stick with Writers Work forever, but I like the job posting feature. I can find freelance writing jobs faster this way.
