What are the Three Different Levels of SCAT?
SCAT stands for The School and College Ability Test. This examination test takes place in the United States. This test is taken to check and measure the mathematical and verbal abilities of the students. Therefore, this exam is an “above grade level” to measure students’ abilities.
This examination test is conducted by John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth [CTY]. The examination is of higher grade level as it measures the student’s ability higher than the current grade level. Even though this examination test can be challenging to crack, it is also precious.
The examination is conducted in three different levels.
1. Elementary SCAT- This SCAT test is set for students studying in 2nd or 3rd grade. Now the examination is designed according to the 4th or 5th grades. This means it measures its student’s ability by setting the paper higher than the current grade level.
2. Intermediate SCAT- This SCAT test is for students currently studying in 4th or 5th grade. The test is designed according to students in 6th or 9th graders. This means that the test is scored by the students compared to the 6th or 9th graders.
3. Advanced SCAT- This SCAT test is for 6th or 8th graders students. This examination is a bit tougher than the others, and the test is set or designed according to students in 9th or 12th graders. Therefore, the students are scored in comparison to 9th or 12th graders.
There are two sections in the SCAT test, one includes verbal reasoning, and the other includes quantitative reasoning. Each section contains 55 questions. These include five experimental ones, but that doesn’t get included in the student’s score.
1. Quantitative reasoning
This section is set for the students to measure and check their mathematical reasoning. It measures the student’s ability in number operations. The section of this paper includes mathematical comparisons in a multiple-choice way. It consists of two quantities, and the students need to answer which one is greater than the other.
To score good marks in this section of the paper, the student must be good in various mathematical operations and know every fact about mathematics. In addition, the student must know how to do various calculations. In short, one must be good in mathematics to solve equations and answer questions.
2. Verbal Section
The verbal section is set to check the student’s vocabulary skills and verbal reasoning in the students. The verbal questionnaire is a multiple-choice analogy, and the students are supposed to choose the best pair of words. The best pair of words will be the one that fits or completes the analogy. To pass this section in the paper, a student needs to have a strong vocabulary, knowledge, and information abilities.
SCAT scores and grades
The SCAT scores are calculated in three ways.
1. Raw Score– This score is given to the students based on the total number of questions he/she has answered. If the student has responded to 31 questions out of 50, the raw score will be 31/50.
2. Scaled Score– The scaled score compares the student’s score to other students. The raw score, once calculated, is converted to a scaled score.
3. SCAT percentile– Through the SCAT percentile evaluation one can compare the student’s abilities to students studying in higher grades.
A good SCAT score for all levels should vary between 460 Verbal and 480 Quantitative.
A student will be listed to various programs based on his/her percentile. There are various summer programs. They will be holding two sessions in summer 2022. One will be held in June, and the other will be held in July.
Final Thoughts
The SCAT test is above grade level but is very valuable. I hope you like our blog and get all the information you need about the SCAT test. Make sure you stick to your schedule because this exam can be difficult to crack. However, with the right amount of dedication and determination, you can very well reach a position where you can give the exams and not worry about getting low marks
