Safe Driving Tips for Heavy Rain

Driving in rainy weather is riskier than driving on a fine day. The best response to this weather is to avoid driving if you can. But sometimes, commuting is inevitable. So, how can you approach it?

Here are safe driving tips for rainy weather.

Precautions Before You Hit the Road

Check the vehicle’s tires. Their responsiveness will decrease with weather deterioration but you don’t want to increase the magnitude of risk.

Whether your vehicle will remain in your control or not depends on its tire treads.

The minimum tread you want for your car’s tires on a rainy day is 4mm. Get them re-grooved before the season.

Plus, you would also want to know if your car is in good shape. It’s a good idea to get it inspected and maintained while preparing for rainy weather.

Clean your windshield and check the car’s headlights. You will need to see far to perceive hazards.

Use Dipped Headlights

Oftentimes, rain accompanies darkness increasing your reliance on the car’s headlights. But a full beam of headlights will not help as you wouldn’t be able to accurately tell the distance or speed of the next car. Switch your headlights to dipped to not hinder the view.

Keep the Car Slow

It will give you more space to use brakes as hazards will develop so you will be relying less on the efficiency of your brakes in bad weather.

Plus, slower cars are generally easier to maneuver. By slowing down your vehicle, you will be leaving more room between the next vehicle on the road meeting the road safety rule of minimum distance.

On a side note, on rainy days, you should maintain double the distance of what you would normally maintain between vehicles following the rules you learned when you prepared for the driving theory test.

Switch off Cruise Control

You need to maintain as much control over your car as you can during rain. Manage its speed and brakes yourself and keep cruise control off.

It will not only give you more time to react to other drivers’ decisions but will also keep your car safe from the spray that will later diminish visibility.

Get Prepared for Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning occurs when your car starts riding on water instead of the road. This results in loss of control of your vehicle. You can respond to this situation by stopping accelerating your car.

Note that you should avoid applying brakes, it will snatch the little control you have left in your car from you. Slowly, turn your tires in the direction of your car’s movement to claim control.

Keep Your Car Well-Ventilated

Visibility is a major safety feature that you want to enhance while driving on a rainy day. And fog is a major concern that reduces visibility. You can fight the fog outside your car a bit by using headlights.

But if you are looking to keep your windows from becoming opaque, you need to keep your car ventilated. If windows are still misty, use a dry cloth to wipe the mist off.

Take Away

Certain weather conditions can prohibit you from driving because of safety concerns. Rain is one of those.

But if driving is a necessity for you, you should only travel while considering these safety measures.
