Over 800 of Thailand’s Elderly Return to the Classrooms in Ayutthaya
AYUTTHAYA – Over 800 elderly people in new school uniforms return to classroom in a program designed to promote social interactions of the seniors in Ayutthaya province.
The elderly students, who are attending 16 schools in the former capital of Thailand, joined the opening ceremony of this year’s program on Thursday.
Officials from related agencies were present at the back-to-school activity before the program starts to offer classes and physical exercises.
What they wear are the same as school boys’ and girls’ uniforms, reminding themselves of their childhood and re-energizing themselves.
Deputy Governor of Ayutthaya Noochanat Prateepthiranan said the provincial administration supported the program aimed at boosting elderly people’s self-esteem and social interactions.
The seniors took part in group recreational activities right after the opening ceremony.
Ayutthaya and other provinces across the country provide this service for the elderly to keep them active as the country is moving toward aging society.
In Thailand, there are 7.5 million people aged 65 and over, projected to increase to 17 million by 2040.
