English Mentors Tips

Jen’s English Tips – Using the Word “Recommend”

Recommended, there are two closely-related forms:  For example:

I recommend you eat the apple.
I recommend your eating the apple.

Either form is acceptable. So, if you use the infinitive (“eat”), then use the subject pronoun (“you”). But, if you use the gerund (“eating”), then use the possessive (“your”).

Other examples:

I recommend you read the following books.
I recommend your reading the following books.
I recommend you see the movie.
I recommend your seeing the movie.
I recommend you not take my recommendations.
I recommend your not taking my recommendations.

Also, if you’re going to use the gerund, then you can leave the possessive off altogether:

I recommend reading the following books.
I recommend seeing the movie.
I recommend not taking my recommendations.
