Common expressions with come and go

.

The structure go/ come for a … is used in some common fixed expressions referring to leisurely activities.

In fact using this structure makes the action sound more casual. Common expressions of this kind are:

Go for a walk / go for a run / go for a swim / go for a ride / go for a drive / go for a sail / go for a drink / go for a bath / go for a shower

Come for a walk /come for a run /come for a swim / come for a ride / come for a drive / come for a sail / come for a drink

Let’s go for a walk.

Would you like to come for a swim?

Wouldn’t it be nice to go for a long drive?

Did you go for a ride last Sunday?

Would you like to go for a sail tomorrow?

‘What did you do this afternoon?’ ‘I went for a long walk.’

Grammar notes

The structure go /come for a… is only used with the particular action nouns given above. We do not, for example, say come / go for a ski or come / go for a read.
