Plans For Overwatch 2's Hero Mode Have Been Scrapped

(CTN News) – In the first announcement of Overwatch 2 at Blizzcon 2019, Blizzard promised a high-quality “highly replayable” component for which it justified the inclusion of ‘2’ at the end of the title.

In an announcement made last night, the Overwatch 2 development team announced that most of their ideas have been discarded including the Hero Missions mode, which in the trailer below had skill trees, leveling up, and other light RPG elements.

Rather, they are going to slowly release co-op story missions and will integrate them into their ongoing seasons in a similar way to the way PvE was handled in Overwatch’s first installment.

According to a Twitch stream from last night, Overwatch 2 executive producer Jared Neuss has said that development in the PvE portion has “not progressed as we had hoped.”

Overwatch 2’s Hero Missions mode was supposed to include massive maps, a wide variety of enemies, and “ridiculous hero talents” that would rework every character’s abilities.

Sadly, it is unlikely that the effort needed to do all of that together into a Blizzard-quality experience will be completed before Christmas.

Neuss explained that there really is no end in sight or defined kind of end date on when we will be able to release it.

According to Neuss, “as a result of this decision, we will not be able to provide you with the dedicated Hero Mode with talent trees, and we will no longer be able to provide you with the long-term talent progression. These things are no longer in our plans”.

In spite of having gone through four years of development, Blizzard does currently have plans to repurpose some of the content that was cut from the game.

Aaron Keller, the game’s director, spoke to Gamespot about the development of new enemies, maps, and tools that will be used in future PvE events and how they will make their way over to existing ones.

He went on to explain that the hero skills could be used for a variety of “cool non-canonical stuff” such as the recent limited-time event that upgraded a few of the hero’s abilities slightly.

When Season 6 launches around August, we’ll have our first look at the new piecemeal story missions that will make up the new season.

Overwatch had co-op missions, which were released every few months in the first game, but I was still asking myself what the main features of the sequel would be.

Is the switch from 4v4 to 5v5 going to take place? Is the shop open? In addition to that, let’s not forget the jolly battle passes as well.

In addition to the new support hero, a Roadhog rework is also mentioned as part of the roadmap, as well as many other details.
