(CTN News) – From time to time, we all notice eye floaters in our vision – and they can be quite bothersome.
It is common to see them when looking at a computer screen or phone screen, reading a book or document or driving in sunny, blue-sky weather. A black spot or squiggly line can be as small as a mark or as large as a ring or a cobweb, but the problem in our vision can take a variety of forms.
According to the NHS, eye floaters are rarely a sign of anything serious, particularly if your vision is unaffected, you’ve had them for a long time, and they’re not getting worse. This occurs when your eye’s gel changes due to a harmless process called posterior vitreous detachment (PVD).
But how can we deal with them? Express spoke to an expert about the best ways to handle these distracting floaters. GP Sarah Brewer explained why eye floaters are caused by clumps of collagen fibres drifting in the vitreous humour of the eye and casting shadows on the retina: “In essence, eye floaters are caused by clumps of collagen fibre drifting in the vitreous humour of the eye.
Vitreous humor is a uniformly transparent gel in health, but aging, lifestyle factors, and environmental stressors like UV light can cause collagen clumping together and cause it to degenerate over time.
People with diabetes, nearsightedness, or cataract surgery are more likely to experience floaters as they age.
Eye floaters, while not necessarily harmful, can cause daily discomfort, distraction, and frustration.
There are a number of lifestyle changes that can help minimise them.”
Don’t forget to drink enough water
The vitreous humour – the gel-like substance within your eyes – contains 98 percent water, which is why drinking enough water is also important for your eye health.
The vitreous loses its shape or shrinks when dehydrated regularly, contributing to the formation of floating particles.
The flushing out of toxins and debris is another factor that contributes to the formation of floaters.
“Drink at least two to three litres of fluid each day. If it’s hot or you’re exercising, drink more. The moment you feel thirsty, you’re already significantly dehydrated.”
Make sure you eat a balanced diet
She explained that certain nutrients, such as vitamin C, lutein, and omega-3 fatty acids, can help prevent vision problems and reduce the risk of macular degeneration.
It is recommended that you include plenty of these in your diet, which can be found in many fruits and vegetables as well as proteins.
Vitamin C, which is naturally found in berries, citrus fruits and bell peppers, fights free radical damage and counteracts oxidative stress, two of the leading causes of floaters.”

Give those eyes a rest
Sleep deprivation can cause a lot of stress on the eyes, resulting in more obvious floaters.
