Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health Issues Dengue Fever Warning

CHIANG RAI – Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) is asking parents and teachers to eliminate breeding grounds of the Aedes larvae at houses and schools to prevent dengue fever from spreading during the new school term after it was found that, in the first five months of this year, there were more than 20,000 dengue patients and more than half of them are students.

Dr. Sukhum Kanjanaphimai, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, says that Thailand is now beginning to enter the rainy season and unused containers could become breeding grounds for mosquitoes that carry dengue fever.

The Bureau of Epidemiology found that, since the beginning of the year, 52 percent of 20,733 dengue patients were students. Parents, teachers and baby sitters are asked to eliminate totally Aedes breeding grounds to ensure that their children will be safe from dengue fever during the new school term.

People are advised to prevent dengue fever by cleaning their houses, collecting garbage and eliminating stagnant water to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.

Eliminating the breeding grounds of Aedes can prevent three diseases, namely dengue fever, Zika virus and Chikungunya.

Symptoms of Dengue

Warning signs usually occur three to seven days after the first symptoms, and include a decrease in fever, bleeding from nose or gums, fatigue, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting and difficulty breathing. Children growing up in risk areas are at a higher risk of severe dengue. Severe dengue can lead to shock.
