Study Finds 4.3% of Thailand's Adult Have Tried Cannabis CBD

CBD: As Thailand’s cannabis CBD consumption rapidly grows, the Center for Addiction Studies has warned of the long-term side effects of cannabis use.

After cannabis was removed from the national narcotics list and the government began drafting regulations to regulate the drug, the director of the centre Dr. Ratsamon Kalayasiri has stated that 8 percent of people who use cannabis will experience medium-term side effects.

According to Dr. Ratsamon, some chronic cannabis and CBD users had developed severe learning and psychological problems. Saying cannabis users were 2.5 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts than non-users, and this effect has been seen among those who have quit cannabis for a long time.

Dr. Ratsamon also cited a study conducted last year. This suggested that following the new cannabis CBD legislation in Thailand, 4.3% of the adult population, or 1.89 million people, have used cannabis. This represents a significant increase from the 1 million Thai cannabis users in 2020.

Cannabis CBD Products on the Market

Kuakaroon Krusong, associate professor of biochemistry at Chulalongkorn University, attributes the higher consumption rate to the increased availability of cannabis products on the market.

She noted that young adults now have more access to cannabis-based foods and beverages.

Assoc Prof Kuakaroon reported that she and her team measured the levels of THC in 30 cannabis-based drinks at cafes and restaurants in Bangkok and found some exceeded the legal limit of no more than 0.015 milligrams of THC, as only 70% of the samples met the government’s public health regulations.

Cannabis has been found in many products sold online, including desserts, beverages, cough syrup, and e-cigarettes.

According to Kuakaroon, these products are heavily promoted as safe and healthy. Therefore, we need strict regulations to control them.

Thanks to Thailand’s ease of regulations, finding CBD-infused food and drinks is now a piece of cake. In Bangkok, many cannabis cafes and restaurants have opened. In parallel, a number of restaurants and cafes are adding CBD to their menus.
