The Ministry of Public Health in Thailand is advising people to wear face masks in crowded places because the number of daily Covid-19 cases has increased by 10-20%.

The permanent health secretary, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, stated on Friday that the number of daily Covid-19 cases had increased by 10-20% from the previous low level.

He also directed hospitals to encourage residents to get vaccine booster shots.

“The Public Health Ministry wants 70% of the total population to have booster shots, but meeting that goal remains difficult. The number of people receiving vaccinations is decreasing due to the recently improved Covid-19 situation “Dr. Opas stated.

The increase in cases was most likely a small wave, but fatalities could rise as a result.

“At the moment, there are approximately ten daily fatalities associated with Covid-19. The death toll may rise slightly as the number of daily cases increases “He stated.

According to Dr. Opas, hospitals were able to handle the situation because the majority of cases were outpatients with minor symptoms.

“The situation should improve after the New Year,” he predicted.

He stated that the BA.2.75 subvariant of Omicron was spreading, but there was no evidence that it was causing serious illness.

In crowded places, people should wear masks to protect themselves and others.

Government lifts rules on Face Masks

In June, the government of Thailand lifted the mandate for face masks and advised vulnerable groups and those who suspect they may be infected to continue using them for personal and public health reasons.

According to a government announcement published in the Royal Gazette, the decision was made due to the improving Covid-19 situation and was intended to help people resume their normal lives.

The use of face masks is now voluntary, but it is recommended to prevent infection from respiratory diseases such as Covid-19, according to the Royal Gazette.

People should continue to wear masks in crowded or poorly ventilated areas, according to the Public Health Ministry.

Vulnerable people, particularly the elderly and those with underlying illnesses, should wear face masks while interacting with others to reduce the risk of infection, as contracting Covid-19 could put their lives in danger.

Covid patients and those in close contact with them should wear face masks to reduce the risk of transmission, according to the announcement.

Following the publication of the new rules, the Bangkok Post polled the public to gauge their feelings about the return to life without face masks.

Mr. Pichitpong Sathaporn, a 47-year-old taxi driver, has stated that he will continue to wear one.

“Because I work in the service industry and have to serve customers from all over the world, I’ve decided to keep wearing my [mask] even though it’s no longer required,” he explained.

Mr. Manutchai Chantawong, a 32-year-old freelance architect who has become accustomed to jogging in the park while wearing a face mask, has stated that he will now lift the mask during his exercise.

“I’m uncomfortable and have to remove it because I can’t breathe well,” he explained. “However, I will continue to wear it in crowded public places, such as the BTS or other public transportation, because I understand that people are still concerned about COVID.”

The government has now declared the entire country a green (Covid-19 surveillance) zone, allowing for the full resumption of business and other activities. The government also lifted all Covid-19 related business and activity restrictions.

Entertainment venues can resume their post pandemic closing hours of midnight, 1am, or 2am.
