Thailand Monkeypox Outbreak

(CTN News) – Mpox (previously known as monkeypox) has killed a man in Thailand and infected 24 others, according to the acting director-general of the Disease Control Department today.

The patient was a 24-year-old Thai man who had been living with HIV for three years before getting pox. High fever, physical weakness, and a rash on his face, hands, and genitals were among his symptoms.

His health necessitated hospitalization on August 25, and he was transported to the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute on September 12 for further treatment, where he died last week.

Nine additional cases were discovered in Bangkok, three in both Chiang Mai and Nonthaburi, and two in Phuket. Nakhon Pathom, Chon Buri, Pathum Thani, Prachin Buri, Saraburi, Udon Thani, and Ubon Ratchathani all had a single case.

The first case of pox in Thailand was discovered in July of last year. Since then, the total number of diagnosed cases has risen to 559, with one fatality. There are 503 Thai natives among them, 52 foreigners of known nationality, and four of unknown identity.

A large number of infected people, 474 in total, are of various sexual orientations. 44% of these people also have HIV. According to the Bangkok Post, the bulk of infected people are between the ages of 30 and 39 (241 cases), followed by those between the ages of 20 and 29 (172 cases).

Dr. Thongchai has recommended those in high-risk categories avoid sexual activities with strangers and keep a safe distance from people with obvious skin rashes and blisters.

A Thai patient who had visited a Chiang Mai entertainment establishment reportedly revealed engaging in a threesome with two foreigners, resulting in a positive monkeypox viral test. More information can be found HERE.
