In NC Hospitals, Respiratory Viruses Restrict Children Under 12

(CTN NEWS) – CHARLOTTE, N.C. —Due to the widespread presence of Respiratory Viruses, including RSV and flu, health systems throughout North Carolina, including Charlotte’s largest health care providers, may soon restrict hospital visitation.

Children under 12 are not permitted to visit hospitalized patients due to the spread Of respiratory viruses under the new rule, which goes into effect at 7 a.m. Wednesday, November 16.

The visiting limitation is being used by the following North Carolina hospitals and healthcare facilities:

  • Atrium Health
  • Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist
  • CaroMont Health
  • Cone Health
  • Novant Health
  • Randolph Health

All visitors must wear masks due to the spread Of respiratory viruses. If you have the flu-like symptoms of a runny nose, sore throat, fever, or cough, you shouldn’t visit patients treated at nearby hospitals.

This applies to people over the age of 13. The restriction does not apply to persons receiving treatment for certain symptoms.

Children may visit sick patients in certain cases, such as when a relative is close to death. Parents should coordinate these visits with their child’s care team.

Health experts are urging everyone to follow practices known to stop the spread of respiratory infections, such as washing their hands frequently, staying home when ill, and receiving the flu and COVID-19 vaccines.

Doctors are warning that RSV cases may continue to rise over the holidays.

“Respiratory Viruses often have an opportunity to increase their activity around the holidays, “at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, pediatric infectious disease specialist Juan Dumois.

Although most RSV instances resemble a cold, Dumois noted that not everyone, particularly small children, experiences this way.

“Babies, especially those under 6 months old, may develop a condition called pulmonary edema, which prevents them from breathing normally and forces them to spend a few days in the hospital on oxygen, “said he.
