An Outbreak Of Measles Has Been Identified In Maine By The CDC

(CTN News) – A measles case that tested positive in a Maine child has been reported to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which is waiting to hear from the child’s parents.

It is true that the child was vaccinated against measles, however, the Maine County Health Department has stated that you cannot contract measles from the vaccine. In order to avoid causing any unnecessary harm to the child, the agency is considering the child to be infectious.

It has been reported that the Maine CDC has notified the locations where the exposure may have occurred, which include a mall, several medical facilities, and a grocery store, and that it is working with these establishments to inform anyone likely to have been exposed.

These locations include the following:

  • Dine and Play at the Auburn Mall, 550 Center Street, Auburn (April 29, between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.) Families are invited to attend the event.

  • There will be a screening for Clear Choice MD at 273 Payne Road in Scarborough on May 1, from 1-4 p.m.

  • Taking place at Hannaford in South Portland, 50 Cottage Road (May 1 between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.).

  • A Mercy Fore River Emergency Department will be located at 175 Fore River Parkway in Portland on May 2, between 7:45 p.m. and 12 a.m., and on May 3, between 12 a.m. and 3 a.m.

“Anyone who was at these locations during these times should keep an eye out for any symptoms that may occur after exposure for at least 21 days,” the Maine CDC emphasized in a statement. If you have any symptoms of an infection, it is best to call a health care provider to get instructions before going to the doctor’s office or hospital, so that further spread of the infection can be prevented.

In most cases, people have been vaccinated against measles as children. Those individuals who were not vaccinated but were exposed to the virus can take steps to prevent infection and should consult a doctor if they have any concerns.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, 10 cases of measles were confirmed in eight states as of April 28, which is the second record for this year.

The measles is a highly contagious disease. The symptoms of the disease include fever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes, and a rash that extends from the head down.

There can be serious consequences associated with measles, such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and death. Infected individuals spread through coughs and sneezes.

The incubation period for measles is four days before the rash appears and four days after the rash appears. It is possible for the virus to survive on surfaces and in the air for up to two hours.

Ten to fourteen days after exposure, symptoms may begin, although they may continue for longer periods of time. Measles is not present in asymptomatic individuals.
