When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, we focus so much on getting fitter, healthier, cleaning our diets and detoxing our bodies.  But what about detoxing our minds for a better, happier mental state?

For many Thai people, this means going to a Vipassana meditation retreat, usually in a remotesetting at a forest temple or countryside monastery.  Many stressed Bangkok executives make a habit of doing this once a year. They come back saying they can think more clearly, feel much calmer, don’t get upset so easily and can make decisions more clearly.

You don’t have to go to a monastery to clear your mind. For some people the no-frills monastic life at a temple retreat can be too hard to do and too extreme.  There are other ways you can detox your mind, such as by becoming more aware of your thoughts, and changing your mental habits.

One of the most powerful things you can do is become more aware of your negative thoughts and change them to more positive thoughts.  You’ll be amazed at what an impact this simple step can have on your mood and outlook on life.

Tania Ho, founder and owner of Museflower Retreat & Spa Chiang Rai, is a trained holistic practitioner specializing in energy therapies including Reiki, Flower Essence Therapy, Hado Energy Balancing Counselling, and Magnified Healing.  She shares her advice on clearing negative thoughts in this Q&A.

What are negative thoughts?

When a thought comes from a negative space, such as worry, fear, anger or resentment, we can classify it as a negative thought.

A fixed belief or limited belief can be also considered as a negative thought, such as when think that we cannot do this or that (for example, ‘I could never do yoga, I can’t touch my toes”, or we’re not good enough “I’m not a good cook”), or we don’t look good (“I look so fat today”; “I hate my hair”). Often our limiting beliefs are stored in our subconscious mind and we don’t realize it until something happens and allows us to reflect upon our own beliefs.

How do negative thoughts affect our behavior and consequently our outcomes in life?

A limiting thought can trigger a certain kind of negative emotion or feeling inside us.  Negative thoughts are a form of energy that can be stored inside our bodies, and if the negative emotion becomes suppressed inside our body long enough, the vibration of this negative emotion may manifest as a certain illness in the body. Besides illness, our limiting beliefs can also affect our attitude and behavior in life.

What other types of thoughts can have powerful effects on our life?

Positive thoughts are as powerful as negative thoughts.  A thought coming from the energy of love and gratitude is very powerful.

Can you give an example of how positive thoughts can be powerful?

From the famous research in his book, The Message from Water, Dr. Masaru Emoto found out that water crystals can be photographed.  The water crystals form different shapes when different words are written on the glass of water or even spoken to the water.  Out of all the water crystal photographs they experimented with, the most beautiful water crystal photo was produced from the words “love and gratitude” placed together and written on the glass of water.  Since our bodies are made of 70% water, imagine how this works on our bodies!

Dr. Emoto’sresearch team also did an experiment on the power of thoughts in the form of prayer, which is a form of love and gratitude. They took the water sample of the Fujiwara Dam in Gunma Prefecture of Japan where they knew the water was dirty. Dr. Emoto invited a monk to perform a prayer by the lake by sending positive and loving thoughts to water. After one hour they collected the water sample again and examined the difference between the two water samples based on the water crystal image. The water crystal image had significantly changed from a dirty-looking blob to a beautiful hexagonal water crystal. This experiment showed that by sending our loving thoughts to water, the energy of water can change.

Does Museflower offer some classes, therapies or retreats that help with clearing negative thoughts?

Museflower Retreat & Spa offers Hado Counseling for rebalancing negative energy, which includes negative thoughts.  It is recommended for anyone who wants to have more vitality and energy / any specific health condition / feel out of balance.

What is Hado Therapy and how does it help?

Originally invented in Austria and later adapted in Japan by Dr. Masaru Emoto, Hado Kaizen (Improvement) Program is a computer program which can scan and measure your bio-energetic state, picking up any negative vibrations that are affecting your health – whether it is vibrations of negative emotions, toxins or viruses.

After all the bio-energetic information is measured, your personalized Hado water will be made by imprinting the positive vibrations to neutralize any negative vibrations in the energetic body.
