Get Your Shot – 24 Dead, 23,000 Sick from Influenza in Thailand
Public health permanent secretary Dr Narong Sahamethapat admitted today (Wednesday) that the influenza (flu) situation this year was of serious concern as the number of patients has increased compared to the statistics last year.
Citing statistics, he said that during January 1 and March 22, there were altogether 23,899 cases throughout the country and out of these 24 have perished.
Most of the patients are in the age group from seven to 34 years old. Provinces with the highest incidence of flu were Lampang, Chiang Mai, Rayong, Uttradit and Phayao.
As a precaution, people have been advised to eat food which is hot, to clean their hands with soap, to use a common spoon and all patients are required to wear face masks to prevent spreading the virus to other people.
Vaccination against flu will be available at state hospitals as of May.
