Genetically Modified Purple Tomatoes Soon To Hit US Market

(CTN News)  _ A nutritionally enhanced Purple tomatoes  has been approved by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) after more than a decade of research and development.

New Atlas reported that gene-edited tomatoes produce up to 10 times more antioxidants than other varieties.

It was reported in 2008 that a type of tomato could be developed by gene editing to produce more antioxidants called anthocyanins.

Many vegetables and fruits, such as red cabbage and blueberries, contain these compounds naturally. purple tomato pigment is what gives these foods their color. As well as sharing a similar colour, they also reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Scientists were able to add higher levels of anthocyanin to the fruit by taking genes from snapdragons.

Researchers fed the gene-edited fruit to mice engineered to develop cancer in 2008 to test its health benefits. The mice given the anthocyanin-boosted tomato lived 30% longer than those not given it.

Cathie Martin, a plant biologist, called the effort the first metabolic engineering effort to promote health.

This is the first GMO [genetically modified organism] with a trait that could benefit everyone.”

After being approved by the USDA, the tomato will soon be on the market. It can be grown anywhere in the US.

According to Jonathan Jones, co-founder of Norwich Plant Sciences, they never expected the regulatory approval to take that long when they began working on the 15 years ago.

As a result, the US is the first country on the planet to allow genetically modified food.

It is believed that the United Kingdom will be the next country to approve the project.
