FUE Hair Transplant and its Variants

The cutting edge FUE technique stole the lights upon its emergence and shoved FUT all the way to the past. Ever since its groundbreaking birth, FUE has been subject to modifications and enhancements that yielded a variety of variants of the traditional FUE technique that are more efficient in terms of time, functionality, or both.

What is FUE

FUE stands for follicular unit extraction and it refers to a micro-surgical procedure that reverses baldness. The efficiency of the technique made the pioneer FUT technique on the verge of extinction. The main difference between FUE and FUT relies on the extraction phase in which FUT leaves a linear scar across the scalp and FUE provides an immaculate finish. The effects of minuscule microscopic scars do not dissolve down to simply being scar free. On the contrary, the size of the scars translates to lower risks of infection, faster healing periods, and no side effects such as nerve damage.

Process overview of hair transplants

Hair transplants begin by first drawing the hairline with a sharpie, shaving the head, and then injecting the local anesthetic. Once the aforementioned steps are completed, the micro-surgical procedure begins. In FUE, surgeons extract healthy hairs from regions of hair growth to later relocate them to regions that lack it.

In the extraction process, a punch is employed to isolate individual hairs by creating circular incisions around the follicular units (grafts) and later extracting them individually with the help of forceps. After the extraction process, comes the preparation for the implantation process.

Surgeons typically utilize micro-sized blades to create incisions or open channels for the extracted hairs on the recipient sites. Once the incisions are made, implantation finally begins. During the phase of implantation, surgeons with the help of forceps gently and manually place the extracted follicular units in the incisions made.

Variants of the standard FUE

There are countless variations of the FUE technique, however, only two shook the scene: Sapphire FUE and DHI Choi FUE.

DHI Choi FUE:

DHI Choi is a technique that has recently surfaced and is already gaining popularity. How does the technique work and is it actually effective? Let us find out together.

DHI Choi follows the same process overview of the standard technique up until the process of channel opening. DHI Choi FUE utilizes a pen-like needle that helps it merge both the incisions making and implantation steps into one.

To further elaborate on the point, with DHI Choi pens, the grafts are loaded into the pen which will later be used to create channels on the scalp. As the pen like needle penetrates the scalp, the pen simultaneously inserts the grafts.

Speaking from a time efficient perspective, DHI serves that objective. However, is it safe to use DHI Choi in a procedure like hair transplants, where the entire success of the surgery relies on the limited number of grafts a person has? The answer is, not at all. Particularly with the delicate grafts, handling them in a mechanical way poses a risk on the delicate follicular units affecting the patient’s final results.

Sapphire FUE:

Sapphire FUE is a technique that utilizes equipment made from the sapphire gemstone. While the change may seem superficial and trivial, it impacts the final result immensely. The use of sapphire in surgical equipment has long been outstanding, owing of course, to the exquisite properties of sapphire.

Being hard while simultaneously flexible, allows sapphire blades to have a sharper more precise V-shaped tips. The particular shape of the sapphire blade endings, as opposed to the U-shaped ending of steel blades, is where all the magic happens.

With a sharper tip, sapphire blades can penetrate the scalp with more precision and speed. Moreover, they require less pressure which means less risk of damaging neighbor tissue. The ease by which sapphire blades function, cuts the procedure time by at least an hour. However, as opposed to DHI Choi, time efficiency does not come at the price of the precious grafts.

Bottom line

Modifications are not always in our favor, and DHI Choi is a prime example of this case. However, that does not mean all variations, because Sapphire FUE is time efficient, however, unlike with DHI Choi the efficiency is not on the behalf of the delicate grafts.
