His Holiness the Dalai Lama made his latest visit to Thailand in 1993.

CHIANGRAI TIMES – Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama in a letter to the Prime Minister of Thailand, Yingluck Shinawatra last week expressed his “sadness and concern” over the recent floods which have inundated many parts of the Buddhist nation for several months now.

“His Holiness expressed his sadness and concern about loss of many lives and damage to property caused by the recent unprecedented floods in and around Bangkok,” a release on the website of the Dalai Lama’s office said.

Unusual heavy monsoon rains since July have caused havoc in the Asian country, resulting in the loss of over 600 lives and damaging millions of homes with an estimated economic loss of over US $ 23 billion.

The Dalai Lama has also made a donation to support the flood relief work in Thailand.

“As a token of sympathy and concern, a donation is being made from The Dalai Lama Trust to support relief work,” the release mentioned.

Thailand is currently reeling under the worst floods in half a century, affecting over two million people since it started in July.

Thailand is one of the first nations that the Tibetan spiritual leader visited outside of India after coming into exile.

During his first visit to the Buddhist nation in 1967, the Dalai Lama met with the King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, the longest reigning monarch in Thai history and the then Prime Minister of Thailand, Thanom Kittikachorn.
