To honor her work to raise awareness about LGBT issues and advocate for their rights, Mattle presented her with a Barbie doll of her likeness. According to People, the actor revealed that her mother would refuse to let her play with dolls as a child because she was assigned male at birth. However, she decided to embrace her inner child once again.

When I was in my 30s, I was in therapy and told my therapist that I was not permitted to play with Barbie dolls. And my therapist said, ‘It’s never too late to have a happy childhood, and what you should do for your inner child is go out and buy yourself a Barbie doll.'” Laverne Cox told the outlet. Her mother began sending her Barbie dolls every birthday, which became a symbol of healing.

As Laverne Cox explained in an interview with BBC, having a trans-Barbie doll is incredibly meaningful to her for so many reasons. She emphasized her statement by saying, “I hope that kids of all gender identities can look at this Barbie and dream.” She continued, “The space of play, of playing with dolls, creating imaginary worlds with dolls is that space of dreaming. And now kids get to dream with Laverne Cox Barbie, the first transgender Barbie. That is a beautiful space of dreaming and possibility.”
