Joni Mitchell to remove music from Spotify

Deadline reports that the 78-year-old singer has taken to her website to announce that she will be removing her music from the platform, as well as showing her support for Neil Young and the medical community. According to her statement, “I have decided to remove all my music from Spotify.”. Some irresponsible people are spreading lies that are causing people to lose their lives. On this issue, I stand with Neil Young and the scientific and medical communities around the world.”

Why did Neil Young and Joni Mitchell remove his music from Spotify?

According to Deadline, the 76-year-old took to his personal website to criticize Spotify’s lack of misinformation policies. According to him, Spotify has a responsibility to mitigate the spread of misinformation on its platform, even though the company does not yet have a misinformation policy. I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines – potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation is being spread by them. Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule.”

Spotify’s share values plunged after he exited the platform, losing over $2 billion in market capitalization. In a statement, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the platform will welcome back Neil Young. The statement read,

Spotify users should have access to all music and audio content available in the world. The responsibility of balancing safety for listeners and freedom for creators is great. Since the start of the pandemic, we have removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to COVID. We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but we look forward to welcoming him back soon.”
