Carlos Santana returns to Thailand for a concert on March 6 at Impact Arena.

BANGKOK – Carlos Santana and emo-punk outfit Paramore are just two of the big names that have so far been confirmed as coming to Thailand this year but with several promoters yet to reveal their lists, there’s bound to be plenty more.

Godung, a Web community that describes itself as a gateway to new music from around the world, takes its first step as concert promoter by bringing English indie rockers the Vaccines to Moonstar Studio next Saturday. The Rubens from Australia and local bands the Yers are the opening acts.

Guitarist and vocalist Justin Young, bassist Arni Hjorvar, guitarist Freddie Cowan and drummer Pete Robertson will perform tracks off their two albums, 2011’s “What Did You Expect from the Vaccines?” and 2012’s “Come of Age” in 2012.

Sungha Jung, the young South Korean finger-style guitarist, returns to Thailand on January 26 courtesy of Dotime (Thailand). The 16-year-old, who rose to fame on YouTube, sold out his two earlier shows in Bangkok and is likely to draw the crowds again for his concert at Aksra Theatre.

Thailand’s leading concert promoter Bec-Tero kicks off the year with two big names – a concert by Japanese rock band Luna Sea on February 15 and veteran rock guitarist Santana on March 6. Both are at Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani.

Luna Sea, featuring bassist J, rhythm guitarist Inoran, violinist Sugizo, drummer Shinya and vocalist Ryuichi, got back together for what was supposed to be a one-off reunion concert at the Tokyo Dome in 2007 then played again in 2008 for the “Hide Memorial” summit. In 2010, the band set off on a world tour.

Santana is returning to Bangkok again as part of his “Sentient Tour” and this time he’ll be bringing a surprise special guest.

The concert will also feature Thai songs-for-lifers Carabao.

Widely regarded as one of the most unique guitarists in the world, Santana has sold more than 100 million records during his 40 years in the business and played to more than 100 million fans at concerts worldwide. To date, Santana has won 10 Grammy Awards, including a record-tying nine for a single project, 1999’s “Supernatural”.

Promoter Rock Entertainment Thailand is staging two concerts during the first quarter and both at Centerpoint Studio on Sukhumvit Soi 105 (Lasalle). The first, on February 12, features American emo-punk rockers Paramore while on March 6, it’s the turn of Canadian punk outfit Sum 41.

Paramore, which features singer Hayley Williams, bassist Jeremy Davis and guitarist Taylor York, will be playing a set of old hits and new singles including “Now” from their self-titled and fourth studio album released on Fueled by Ramen. It’s the band’s first album without founding members Josh and Zac Farro. For their first concert in Thailand, Paramore are bringing their own opening act, Philadelphia outfit MewithoutYou.

Sum 41 is a Canadian punk rock band featuring Deryck Whibley on vocals and guitars, Tom Thacker on guitars, Jason Cone McCaslin on bass and Steve Jocz on drums. The lads will be performing at the Soundwave Festival in Perth on March 4 before flying to Bangkok. Thai rockers Brandnew Sunset and the Yers will open for them.

The band released their debut album, “All Killer, No Filler” in 2001 which achieved mainstream success and the first single “Fat Lip” topped the Billboard Modern Rock chart. They were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for the song “Blood in My Eyes”.
