Police in northeastern Thailand have launched a manhunt for a man who made off with thousands of baht worth of gold in a brazen armed robbery at a department store in Khon Kaen on Saturday.

The Khon Kaen city police chief said the robbery occurred at about 7:20 pm at the Central Plaza Mall.

Footage from CCTV security cameras also showed the man wearing jeans, wearing a white T-shirt, sneakers, and a black hood over his head. He walked into the Kirati gold shop on the second floor of the department store. He entered the shop unnoticed as shop employees were busy with customers.

Suddenly, he fired a shot into the ceiling, causing the gold shop employees and customers to scramble for cover. He then leaped over the counter and grabbed some gold necklaces from the wall display, before jumping back over the counter and fleeing.

He fired one more warning shot with his handgun before running out of the store, heading in the direction of the city pillar. Khon Kaen police said nobody was hurt.

Pol Col Preecha said it was unclear how many gold necklaces he had stolen, but they were believed to be of more than 10 baht weight.

Police were deployed in a manhunt for the robber.
