Thailand’s Minister of Defense Emphasizes the Need to Destroy Drug Networks

CHIANG RAI – Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan has emphasized the need to destroy drug networks that remain in the communities, although measure to suppress illegal drugs has led to arrests of many offenders and a large amount of drugs have seized.

Defense Ministry Spokesman Lt. Gen. Khongcheep Tantrawanich disclosed that Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan has praised the operations by government agencies including administrative officials, police and military officers, the Narcotics Control Board and Armed Forces Security Center for working proactively with people to provide clues to continually intercept, eradicate and arrest drug dealers and seize a large amount of drugs along the borders and inner areas.

In May, 25,048 offenders were arrested. Almost 27 million methamphetamine pills and 574 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, also known as ice, were seized along with heroin, opium, cocaine, marijuana and many others. In early June, 2,000 kilograms of ice, worth billions of baht in export value, were seized in Bangkok and Pathum Thani.

Gen. Prawit has instructed police and local administrative agencies to work with people more closely and use clues of local people to destroy the drug networks that remain in the community, emphasizing that more confidence and public participation coupled with proactive work and the earnestness of local heads of government offices will reflect the overall success of the work.
