PATTAYA – Deputy Tourist Police Chief Surachate Hakparn, told a news briefing in Pattaya Monday, that police have arrested 2 Nigerians for an allegedly running a ‘romance scam’ targeting lonely Thai women.

Pattaya police identified them as Ositadima Ibeh, 28, and Chinedu Calistus Ndubuisi, 30, both Nigerian Nationals.

They were found with 11 credit cards, 20 bank books, as well as documents related to US and Syrian military positions.

Police Chief Surachate Hakparn told the media briefing that the gang members usually pose as wealthy Europeans or Americans and contact victims via Facebook.

They then dupe the unsuspecting victims into believing they have sent gifts to them, but then claim the victims need to pay customs duty first before they can receive them.

Nigerian dating scam (or romance scam), besides just asking for money for their studies, sick relatives, etc.. usually involves this scheme: the scammers upload fake attractive photos, in most cases of white people.

Men are usually widowed engineers, building contractors, military, vet doctors, surgeons or antique dealers. Women are usually nurses, models, charity or UNICEF workers or antique dealers

Nigerian scammers have been coming to Thailand, as they can easily get into the country on visitor visas or on the student visas. Tourist Police has launched a Nation wide crackdown on people abusing student visas.
