Thai Customs Detains Thai Airways Flight Attendant for Smuggling

Following a tip-off, customs officials arrested the Thai Airways attendant for trying to avoid tax payments. She had boarded a Thai Airways flight from Italy.

BANGKOK – A Thai Airways International flight attendant has been detained for try to smuggle designer-name products from Italy. The unnamed flight attendant was trying to avoid paying duty on the luxury items.

Following a tip-off, customs officials arrested the Thai Airways attendant for trying to avoid tax payments. She had boarded a Thai Airways flight from Italy.

Thai customs found designer-name products concealed under the flight attendant’s clothing.

Sutheerat Siripalanon, director for in-flight services, said the company had a policy to forbid employees from smuggling illicit goods. And or exceeding the specified allowances for products with intent to avoid Thai customs duty, Thai media reported on Saturday.

The airline closely monitors suspicious behavior by staff and alerts customs officials to arrest offending employees, said Mr Sutheerat.

Thai Airways is preparing to take disciplinary action against the employee.

Thai Customs to X-Ray Machines to Scan all Incoming Luggage

Thailand’s Customs Department said it will complete the installation of 23 x-ray machines at Suvarnabhumi Airport by years end.  A move to improve security checks of luggage of inbound passengers and to prevent smuggling.

“The X-ray Machines will check of luggage from inbound planes before the passengers can claim them.

The x-ray machines, will allow customs officials to see what’s inside the luggage and immediately. Passengers trying to smuggle items to avoid duties will now have to pay the Customs before departing the airport.
