Police Seize US$1.8Million Worth of Drugs and Assets

Police in Northern Thailand arrested 70 suspects and seized 14 guns and 700,000 meth pills, during five days of anti-drug raids. Those arrested included a married couple in Chiang Mai suspected of being associated with a major drug trafficking syndicate.

Pol Lt Gen Piya Tawichai, the Commissioner of Northern Thailand’s Provincial Police Region 5, said police impounded assets worth more than 60 million baht (US$1.8million) from drug trafficking networks in Nan, Phayao, and Chiang Rai provinces during the raids.

The anti-drug raids were conducted from Nov 8-13th, with 70 suspects arrested and 700,000 meth pills, 14 illegal firearms seized.

Police said a married couple arrested were members of a large drug trafficking syndicate. They were identified as Mrs. Mai Sae Ja from Chiang Mai and her husband Jaimoo. They were reportedly apprehended at two different locations, Pol Lt Gen Piya Tawichai said.

He told the press briefing the woman was caught in a sting operation set up by an undercover police officer. He allegedly contacted a gang member and arranged a 25,000-baht purchase of meth pills.

When Mrs. Sai showed up for the transaction police searched her and found 4,000 meth pills in her possession. Drug suppression police then arrested her husband at a house in Chian Mai’s in San Sai district. A search of the apartment the couple used officers uncovered 700,000 more meth pills.

Furthermore, the couple will be charged with possessing illegal drugs with intent to sell.
